Independent Audience Growth
Audience strategy, platform growth and distribution for an independent media brand.
Kyoto Sound · Senior Marketing Strategist · Independent music and media
No client, no marketing department, and no one else to own the outcome. If the audience doesn’t respond, the decisions to question are mine.
Find the audience
Audience development starts with who the work is actually for, read from behavior rather than assumed.

Built through audience strategy, platform optimization, playlist growth and distribution.
I grew the playlist by aiming for listeners who come back rather than for more posts, and by reading what they actually did.
Stage, and the lever behind it
- Discovery
Someone new finds the work.
Playlists, search, paid tests - Listen / view
The first play earns the next.
Platform optimization - Follow
A reason to come back.
Playlist growth - Return
Something new is waiting.
Releases, playlist updates - Broader distribution
Returning listeners earn wider reach.
Distribution strategy, partnerships
Own the feedback loop
When the audience responds, or doesn’t, there’s nowhere to hide.
Client results pass through other people’s decisions first. Here every decision is mine, so the response is a direct read on my calls.
- My recommendation
- Client approval
- Budget and scope
- Specialists
- The audience

Observe reads
- Audience behaviorWho listens, follows, returns
- Platform performanceWhat the platform surfaces
- Content responseWhat gets saved, shared, skipped
- DistributionWhere new listeners come from
Owning the audience changed how I think about marketing.
Client and in-house work taught me to analyze performance and coordinate execution. Independent work added another discipline: make the thing, put it in front of people, see whether they care, and adjust when they don’t.
